In this week's "My Job, My Passion," we delve deeply into the intriguing life of renowned dancer Maestro Milord, who generously explains the significant impact dance has had on his life.

Maestro Milord, whose real name is Milord Otumfuo, began his incredible adventure in the dance world when he was just five years old. His father, who was an accomplished dancer at the time, had a major influence in kindling his love for the form. "I vividly recall the stories my grandmother shared, narrating how I used to sneak into the midst of everyone when my father was teaching, eagerly trying to dance alongside them," the 37-year-old maestro says, reflecting on his early years. He started his first dance company in junior high school, specializing in the hip dance form known as "cracking," which is similar to breakdancing and has captivating body rolls and expressive body gestures. I gained a reputation as the best in the neighborhood where I grew up," Milord says with pride as he looks back. But when his father brought back a Michael Jackson VCD from his trip to Taiwan, it was a turning point. "I started watching, I started learning, and it changed my life," smiles Milord in reflection.

His adventure continued as he dove into the fascinating world of salsa dancing, which turned out to be his greatest love. He proudly declared, "Dancing has taken me on a journey around the world, and I would choose it all over again," as a professional Salsa show dancer who graced stages throughout Europe and South Africa. It has bestowed upon me not just a thriving community but also a close-knit family."

In addition to being a superb dancer, Milord Otumfuo is a talented choreographer, the head of a dance group, and an enthusiastic instructor. He freely admits, when questioned about his interests, "If I had to pick, my favorite thing to do is teach. It's something I've always had—a strong desire to give back and a passion for learning. It's a profound experience to teach, especially young people. You discover that you are learning as much as imparting when you work with them." Currently, Maestro Milord teaches Afro-dancing and Drip classes at California Fitness in Accra with his dancing partner Elsie.

Maestro Milord has a strong dedication to dance and follows an intense training schedule to be in top physical shape. "Physical fitness is crucial for dancers. With an endearing smile, he says, "Having strong legs is essential, and looking beautiful doesn't hurt either. It is obvious how committed and passionate he is. He humbly says, "It's more like dancing chose me than me choosing dancing," in his closing remarks.

Maestro Milord's story demonstrates how his passion for dancing has impacted not just his amazing career but also his close-knit family and community. It reminds us that sometimes we find our interests rather than the other way around.
