Hon. Stephen Yakubu, the Upper East Regional Minister has stressed the need for the Regional Hospital to be well equipped to attract health professionals to serve its purpose as a referral centre for the Region.

He said the current situation of the Regional Hospital compelled patients who needed further management for their health conditions to seek health care at the Tamale or Komfo-Anokye Teaching Hospitals.

He noted that the skeletal health professionals, especially Doctors had to refer patients to other facilities which posed financial burdens to patients in the Region, whereas with a well equipped Regional Hospital and Specialists, patients stress in seeking health care could be reduced.

The Minister said this when the Ghana Health Service Council, led by its Chair, Dr. Sefah Bediakio called on him in his office as part of the Council’s tour of the Region.

Hon. Yakubu, who was passionate about resolving the challenges at the Regional Hospital, said “We should be able to do whatever the Tamale Teaching Hospital is doing right here in our Regional Hospital.”

He touched on the issue of fence wall for the Hospital to prevent further encroachment, saying that government had released funds for the fencing project, and the money could be returned to government with any further delay.

He said the site for the Infectious Disease Centre at Zebilla in the Bawku West District was strategic and would serve its intended purpose in the Region.

The Honourable Minister expressed gratitude to the Akufo-Addo-led-government for adding the Talensi District to the Agenda lll policy, and assured the Council of the timely completion of the projects in the beneficiary Districts.

Hon. Yakubu commended the Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi for his diligence to work since he took over the affairs of the Service in the Region, and urged staff of the Service to support him to improve on the health needs of people in the Region.

On his part, the Chairman of the Council, Dr. Bediakio said the purpose of the visit was intended for the Council to interact with officials of the Service and familiarize itself with activities at the various health facilities to influence health policies at the national level.

He noted that only the Upper East Region had the complete membership of the Regional and District Health Committees in the country.

That, according to him, indicated the seriousness stakeholders attached to health delivery in the region, and also acknowledged the effective collaboration between the Regional Coordinating Council  (RCC) and the Service.

He assured the Regional Minister that the teething problems in health care delivery in the Region would be addressed at the national level for improved service delivery.
