It has been reported that a number of notable people, including sub-chiefs, are diverting relief supplies that were intended for flood victims back to their own homes and then misappropriating those supplies. This is in reference to the floods that occurred as a result of the overflow of the Akosombo and Kpong dams, which caused many people to lose their homes.
The acting Paramount Chief of Mepe, Rudolph Kwadzo Gli, expressed this apprehension prior to the provision of food goods and various relief items worth GH20,000 to the flood victims in the town last Friday (November 10). The presentation was made by the Avazorli Union, of which Mepe is a member.
Therefore, he made an appeal to all of the donor organisations, pleading with them to hand over the relief materials to the palace of the Mepe Paramount Chief so that they may be distributed fairly among the people who had been displaced.
According to the reporting of Alberto Mario Noretti for Graphic Online, the acting paramount chief did not provide any additional specifics on people responsible for the fraudulent conduct.
Ziavi, Kpedze-Todze, Etordome, Botoku, Ando (Ghana and Togo), and Kpando-Anyigbe are the other communities that speak the Avazorli language.
Togbe Kwaku Ayim IV, the Paramount Chief of Ziavi, along by a delegation of Avazorli chiefs and queens, paid an emotional visit to Mepe in order to give the things to the Mepe Palace.
The products consisted of bales of clothing, bags of gari, plantain, maize, corn flour and dough made from cassava, as well as a consignment of sachet water and an amount of money that has not been disclosed.
Togbe Ayim stated, "We may be separated by distance, but our strong bond of kinship will always hold us together," and this is quite true.
He pleaded with the rulers of Mepe to include residents of Mepe who were unable to move their bodies as part of the distribution of the items.
Togbe Ayim gave the assurance that the other Avazorli groups would remain steadfastly behind their siblings in Mepe, through thick and thin, and would always share their anguish in times of suffering. This was a promise that Togbe Ayim made to his people.
A shared burden of sorrow
He pleaded with the people of Mepe to continue to support one another through their grief and to be patient as they waited for life to return to its usual state while the government and other stakeholder organisations worked to find a solution to the situation.
The acting Paramount Chief expressed his gratitude to the Avazorli Union for their thoughtful act, which he described as "overwhelming" and a "true demonstration of love and goodwill towards the flood victims."
"This will further strengthen the unbreakable ties of unity among us," he added. "This is something that cannot be broken."
The supreme chief in acting capacity pledged his word that the products will be distributed among the flood victims in the most equitable manner possible.
The Avazorli Union can trace their ancestry all the way back to Goshen in ancient Egypt through Nostie in the Republic of Togo, where they were once an identifiable group, before fleeing in a mass exodus from the tyrannical rule of King Agorkoli to their present locations in Ghana, along with the Ando group in both Ghana and Togo. Today, the Ando group can be found in both Ghana and Togo.
A union was established in 1984 with the goal of fostering unity and cohesion among members. This process culminated in the union's inauguration in Ziavi in 1987, where the name Avazorli Union was revealed to the public for the first time.
