Discovered through observations of distant supernovae in the late 1990s, dark energy's repulsive force counters the gravitational pull of matter, driving galaxies away from each other at an ever-increasing rate.

Proposed explanations include a cosmological constant, a dynamic field known as quintessence, or modifications to Einstein's theory of general relativity. The accelerated expansion challenges our understanding of the fundamental forces that govern the universe.
