Gunmen believed to be brothers and Hamas members opened fire at a bus stop in Jerusalem, killing five people and wounding at least eight others, police said.
Israeli police said the assailants opened fire Thursday at people standing on the main road at the entrance to the holy city.
According to Magen David Adom, director of Israel's national emergency medical, disaster, ambulance, and blood bank services, a woman, 24, an elderly woman, and a man, who appeared to be in his 70s, were among the four people who suffered serious injuries. The two gunmen were confirmed dead by the police as well.
Three of the five severely injured patients were transferred to Hadassah Ein Kerem, and two of the five were later pronounced dead at Shaare Zedek Hospital. Two victims were treated at the scene in critical condition. Both gunmen were reportedly Palestinian.
There are unconfirmed reports of several attack sites. The horrifying scene was captured on camera when two gunmen exited a white car that was parked close to the bus stop and started shooting at the people who were waiting.
People began to run as shots were fired, and the men fled to their cars, where they were also shot. Police said the two gunmen were "neutralized" by security forces and armed civilians. Police said the couple got out of their car at around 7:40 a.m. local time and began firing shots.
The attacker's identity was not immediately revealed, although some media outlets in Hebrew claimed that he was from East Jerusalem. Officers are searching the area to remove any further attackers.
Photos from the crime scene show a large automatic rifle and a handgun on the ground. "Brutal" was how US Ambassador to Israel Jack Lew described the "heinous terrorist attack." He said to X, "My deepest condolences to all those affected and my thoughts are with the families of the victims."
Following the shooting, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said Israel was "at war on all fronts." The incident occurred just after the ceasefire with Hamas was extended for seven days.
"The horrific attack in Jerusalem reminds us that our enemies are not just the Nazis in Gaza. "With God's help, we will pursue and destroy them everywhere," Smotrich said. He wrote on X and said that Israel seeks "complete victory on all fronts."
The Times of Israel reported that Shin Bet intelligence said the two gunmen were members of Hamas and had previously been imprisoned for terrorist activities. Their names are Murad Namr (38 years old) and Ibrahim Namr (30 years old), brothers from the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sur Bahel.
According to Shin Bet, Murad was imprisoned from 2010 to 2020 for planning terrorist attacks in the Gaza Strip. Ibrahim was arrested in 2014 for unknown terrorist activities, authorities said.
