Arne Slot's Liverpool side moved three points closer to clinching the Premier League title thanks to Virgil van Dijk's 89th minute header in their 2-1 win against West Ham United. Liverpool No. 11 Mohamed Salah is hoping that club captain Van Dijk prolongs his stay at Anfield by putting pen to paper on a new contract, after the Egyptian agreed a new two-year deal earlier in the week.

Ideally, Virgil will follow. He can do whatever he wants, but I would love to play with him next season."

With four minutes remaining, Andy Robertson's own goal brought The Hammers level, but Van Dijk scored from a corner to put The Reds back on track for the title in a few weeks. "I was on the bench, it is worse there!" After the nervous conclusion to the game, the Egyptian exclaimed. "We got there in the end, which is the most important thing."

After West Ham's victory, Van Dijk was uncharacteristically vague when discussing the circumstances surrounding his contract with Liverpool. "I'm not sure. I know, but I don't know," Van Dijk simply said, allowing a wry smile to flash across his face.

After Arsenal's draw with Brentford on Saturday, Arne Slot's side had the chance to make them pay with another three points at Anfield on Sunday.

But with time running out following Robertson's own goal, it was up to the 33-year-old to step up.

"Robbo and I are similar to brothers. We've been together through everything, and this is obviously part of the game," said Van Dijk of the own goal. "Luckily we got the win.

Liverpool are now attempting to persuade captain Virgil van Dijk to sign a contract extension with the Egyptian star. The Dutch defender is nearing the end of his current contract, so it is likely that he will sign a new one. After the clash against the Hammers, Salah sent out a strong message to Van Dijk as he expressed his desire to continue playing together at the English club.

With Arsenal dropping points at Brentford, Arne Slot's side are now two wins away from securing their record-equalling 20th English top-flight title. They will be next seen in action on April 20 against Leicester City, away from home.
