Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emphasized the imperative need for an end to violence in Bawku to address the longstanding conflict that has plagued the town. During a visit to Bawku on Tuesday, December 12, Dr. Bawumia, addressing the Bawkunaba, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, and his elders, expressed deep concern about the severe impact the conflict has had on the community. He urged the conflicting factions, Mamprusis, and Kusasis, to abandon violent means and, instead, utilize the established constitutional processes for peacefully resolving the chieftaincy dispute between them.
Dr. Bawumia underlined the clarity of the guidelines provided by the Republic of Ghana's constitution for chieftaincy dispute resolution, emphasizing the involvement of the House of Chiefs and, ultimately, the Supreme Court. He firmly asserted that resorting to violence and killing would never bring about a resolution, stressing that, according to the constitution, no government has the authority to impose force in settling chieftaincy disputes.
Expressing his distress over the situation, Dr. Bawumia, identifying himself as a son of the North, conveyed his heartfelt concern about the conflict between Kusasis and Mamprusis, highlighting the unnecessary loss of lives and the disruption of economic activities and development in Bawku. Despite the existing tensions, he asserted the commonality between the two groups, emphasizing their historical intermarriage and linguistic similarities.
Dr. Bawumia passionately advocated for peace and harmony, asserting his belief in the possibility of achieving a peaceful coexistence between Kusasis and Mamprusis in Bawku. He emphasized the importance of working collaboratively towards this goal for sustainable development. Recognizing the urgent need for development in the community, he urged both groups to channel their efforts towards fighting for development rather than against each other.
Addressing the core issues faced by the community, Dr. Bawumia highlighted poverty and underdevelopment as the fundamental challenges. He expressed his commitment, as president, to contribute significantly to uplifting the people from poverty and underdevelopment. However, he emphasized the indispensable role of peace in facilitating development, stating that an atmosphere of conflict hinders progress.
Dr. Bawumia drew attention to the aspirations of the youth, emphasizing their need for employment, education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He urged the community to unite in fighting for the well-being of the youth rather than engaging in internal conflicts.
The Bawkunaba commended Dr. Bawumia for his visit, interpreting it as a demonstration of his role as a unifier. The visit was marked by the presence of a substantial government delegation, including Interior Minister Ambrose Dery, Chieftaincy, Religion, and Culture Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng, National Chairman of NPP Stephen Ayesu Ntim, and numerous Members of Parliament from the northern part of the country.
