On Monday, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, revealed that a minimum of 50 individuals fell victim to unidentified gunmen in various communities within Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Areas of the state. Governor Mutfwang shared this distressing information during a luncheon organized by Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, for troops of Operation Safe Haven in Mangu.

Expressing dismay over the relentless attacks and extensive destruction of farmlands and property by these gunmen, the governor pledged to implement stringent measures to address the escalating insecurity within the state. He emphasized that, based on available intelligence reports, at least 50 lives were lost in Mangu and Bokkos within the preceding 48 hours, deeming such acts as unacceptable and calling for an end to the senseless violence.

Governor Mutfwang conveyed resilience on behalf of the Plateau people, asserting that despite the challenges, the spirit of the community remains unbroken. He expressed gratitude to the troops for their unwavering efforts in the fight against insecurity and assured them of his commitment to supporting the military and other security agencies in safeguarding the state.

He emphasized that reinforcing security measures would not only curb the ongoing attacks but also prevent associated criminal activities such as cattle rustling, armed robbery, and kidnapping for ransom.

Maj.-Gen. Abdusalam Abubakar, the Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), provided additional insight into the situation, stating that the troops had responded to 36 distress calls from various locations in the past 48 hours. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by some soldiers who sustained injuries during these responses, underscoring the commitment to halting criminal activities in Plateau State.

The alarming incidents underscore the urgent need for comprehensive security measures to safeguard the lives and property of residents. The collaborative efforts of the military, security agencies, and the commitment of the state government are crucial in addressing the escalating challenges posed by unidentified gunmen in Plateau State. As investigations unfold, there remains a collective responsibility to establish lasting solutions to restore peace and security to the affected communities.
