In a tragic incident within the Edo State Police Command, a police Inspector named Jonathan Okouromi reportedly shot and killed Sergeant Abosele Akhere. The incident unfolded around 9 pm on Sunday in Ikponwosa/Egban community, Egor Local Government Area of Edo.

The background to the incident involved an operation led by operatives of the Edo State Police Anti-Kidnapping Squad and the Control Intelligence Rapid Response Squad. Their objective was to apprehend suspected cultists who had been instilling fear in the Ikponwosa/Egban community.

During the operation, Sergeant Abosele Akhere successfully arrested a notorious cultist identified as 'Raggae,' a prime suspect in cult-related activities.

However, the unforeseen and tragic turn of events occurred when Inspector Jonathan Okouromi allegedly lifted his gun, pulled the trigger, and shot Sergeant Akhere from behind.

An anonymous source provided details of the distressing incident, stating, "All of a sudden, Inspector Jonathan Okouromi just lifted his gun, pulled the trigger and shot Akhere from the back. Nobody knew what happened or why he did that. He just fired him from behind. The man fell immediately and started bleeding."

Following the shooting, Sergeant Akhere was swiftly rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where he was tragically confirmed dead by the attending doctor.

In a startling turn, Inspector Okouromi reportedly escaped from the scene with his gun once he realized he had fatally shot his junior colleague. Additionally, the arrested cult suspect, 'Raggae,' managed to escape, while another individual, Mr. Agbontaen Monday, a member of the Eiye confraternity, was apprehended.

As the search for the fleeing Inspector Okouromi continues, the police in Ugbowo division are actively pursuing his whereabouts. Meanwhile, the body of the slain police sergeant has been deposited at the mortuary as investigations progress.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Edo State, Chidi Nwabuzor, acknowledged the incident but indicated that he was on holiday. He assured that further details would be provided upon his return to the office.

This tragic episode echoes a similar occurrence in Rivers State last week, where Inspector Nelson Abuante tragically shot and killed his colleague, Inspector Monday Gbaramana, in a case of mistaken identity during an attempt to arrest a suspect. These incidents highlight the inherent risks and challenges faced by law enforcement officers and emphasize the importance of thorough investigations to ascertain the circumstances surrounding such unfortunate events.
