A devastating road accident on the Ikirun/Offa Expressway in Inisa claimed the lives of no fewer than nine passengers on Monday. The tragic incident occurred when the truck they were traveling in lost control, veering off the road into the bush. The truck, laden with bags of beans and passengers from Niger State en route to Edo State, was involved in the accident that resulted in the immediate loss of all nine lives on board.

Kehinde Adeleke, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun Command, provided details about the accident, revealing that it happened in the early hours of Monday at the Yidi Junction, Inisa. The Mitsubishi Canter with plate number MNA606SB NIGER was carrying bags of beans from Niger State to Benin, Edo State.

Adeleke conveyed the aftermath of the accident, stating, “The FRSC officers evacuated and moved the three injured passengers to Orotunde Hospital Ikirun, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the hospital’s morgue. Bags of beans and the vehicle involved have been evacuated to the Inisa Police Divisional Headquarters.”

In another unfortunate incident on Christmas Day, two individuals lost their lives in an accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The crash occurred after the Sagamu Interchange, before the Redemption Camp in Mowe, Ogun State. The accident involved an 18-seater Hiace bus traveling from the interchange en route Mowe.

Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, confirmed the incident, attributing it to wrongful overtaking on the part of the bus driver. Okpe provided details, stating, “The fatal crash occurred at about 1720 hrs on Christmas Day, involving 15 persons, which comprised of 12 male adults and three female adults. One person was injured, and two persons were recorded dead (two male adults). Two vehicles were involved, a Toyota bus with registration TSE266XA, and a Mazda bus marked FKJ215XX."

The injured victim was taken to Idera Hospital for medical attention, while the deceased were deposited at the same hospital’s morgue. The suspected causes of the crash were wrongful overtaking and speeding.

Anthony Uga, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ogun, urged motorists to avoid speeding and exercise maximum attention while driving. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and advised them to contact the FRSC in Sagamu for more information about the crash.

These tragic incidents underscore the importance of road safety measures and responsible driving to prevent loss of lives on the highways. As authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding these accidents, it serves as a poignant reminder for motorists to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic regulations.
