In a tragic revelation, the Plateau State Police Command unveiled the harrowing aftermath of the Christmas Eve attacks, reporting that 86 lives were lost and 221 houses were set ablaze in the assault by gunmen in Plateau State. The State Commissioner of Police, Okoro Alawari, shared these distressing details in a statement released on Tuesday, signed by the command's spokesman, Alfred Alabo.
The attacks, perpetrated by assailants in 15 communities spanning Bokkos and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of the state, also resulted in the destruction of eight vehicles. The Commissioner of Police, CP Okoro Alawari, expressed profound grief over the devastating assaults that unfolded in the remote villages on December 24, 2023, during the odd hours of the night.
On that fateful night, 12 villages in Bokkos LGA bore the brunt of the violence: Ndun, Ngyong, Murfet, Makundary, Tamiso, Chiang, Tahore, Gawarba, Dares, Meyenga, Darwat, and Butura Kampani. Additionally, three villages in Barkin-Ladi LGA, namely NTV, Hurum, and Darawat, also experienced attacks during the same timeframe.
In response to this heinous act, the Commissioner of Police swiftly took action to prevent further bloodshed. He directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations to relocate to Bokkos LGA and deployed a team of operational forces to the troubled areas. This proactive measure aimed not only to prevent additional attacks but also to assess the extent of damages in the affected regions.
The comprehensive assessment in Bokkos LGA revealed the grim reality: a total of 12 villages were attacked, with 221 houses set ablaze, 27 motorcycles burnt, and eight motor vehicles destroyed. The human toll was staggering, with over 79 lives lost in Bokkos LGA, while an additional 17 deaths were recorded in Barkin-Ladi LGA.
