The Edo State Police Command is fully cognizant of the recent alarming surge in secret cult-related violence and killings in Benin, a situation that has tragically claimed the lives of innocent citizens, including Hillary Nosa Odia, a dedicated staff member of Independent Television and Radio in Benin City. The distressing incident occurred on Christmas Eve when Odia was reportedly shot dead at a local drinking joint situated near Esigie Police Station in the heart of Benin.

In response to these disturbing developments, the police have issued a statement through their Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, assuring the public that they are actively and vigorously combating this wave of crime. The primary objective is to restore a sense of peace and safety for all residents of Edo State.

Nwabuzor conveyed the gravity of the situation by acknowledging the loss of one of the police personnel during an operation on December 24 in the Ugbowo axis of the city. Despite this tragic sacrifice, the statement emphasized that substantial progress has been made through the arrest of a significant number of secret cult members affiliated with various groups across different locations in the state. These apprehended individuals are slated to face legal prosecution in court, reflecting the commitment of law enforcement to bring those responsible for these heinous acts to justice.

Mr. Mohammed Adamu Dankwara, the Commissioner of Police, urged the people of Edo State to remain calm amid these challenging circumstances and to continue their Christmas celebrations. He reiterated the unwavering commitment of the police force and the readiness of its officers and personnel to ensure the safety of lives and property throughout the yuletide period. The commissioner acknowledged the sacrifices made by the police in their operations against secret cults and sought the understanding and cooperation of the public in these trying times.

The statement underscored the importance of citizens actively participating in efforts to combat crime by providing valuable information to the police. It emphasized the modern and civilized approach to policing, which encourages collaboration between law enforcement and the community. This call for citizen involvement reflects the shared responsibility in fostering a secure and harmonious environment for everyone in Edo State.

As the Commissioner of Police urged calm and resilience, he recognized the need for collective action in addressing the root causes of secret cult activities. The multifaceted approach includes law enforcement operations, community engagement, and the justice system working together to eradicate the menace of secret cults in Edo State. The statement concluded by reiterating the command's commitment to the safety and well-being of the citizens and residents of Edo State during the festive season and beyond.
