This is to coincide with the implementation of the Emission Levy Bill in January 2024.

The recently approved Emissions Levy Bill, passed by Parliament, imposes an annual fee of GH¢100 on all owners of petrol and diesel cars, effective January 2024.

The government’s objective behind this tax is to encourage the use of environmentally friendly energy sources for vehicle power, aligning with its commitment to climate-positive actions and carbon offset initiatives.

In response to this developments, the GPRTU has submitted a petition to the Speaker of Parliament, urging a reconsideration of the Emission Levy Bill.

The spokesperson emphasized our plea to Parliament during an interview on Citi News, urging a thorough reconsideration of the matter. He expressed our concerns, stating that in the absence of any remedial action, we would confront additional challenges. With a sense of determination, he outlined our contingency plan, revealing that in the event of unaddressed issues, we intend to coordinate and implement a significant increase in lorry fares, specifically not less than 60%. This revelation underscores the severity of the situation and our commitment to finding viable solutions.

The plea to Parliament signifies our reliance on the legislative body to address the issues at hand, emphasizing the importance of their intervention. The spokesperson's mention of organizing ourselves reflects a proactive approach, indicating our readiness to navigate challenges independently if necessary. The proposed upward adjustment in lorry fares is a strategic response to potential obstacles, illustrating our preparedness to take decisive action to mitigate adverse effects.

In summary, the spokesperson conveyed a multifaceted message during the interview, encompassing our appeal to Parliament, recognition of potential problems, and a proactive strategy to address challenges through a proposed increase in lorry fares. This comprehensive approach reflects our dedication to finding solutions and adapting to evolving circumstances.
