Kwabena Agyepong Criticizes Akufo-Addo's Inaction Despite 2020 Election Challenges
Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, expressed disappointment in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's failure to implement changes in the government following the challenges faced during the 2020 elections. Agyepong had expected the president to learn from those struggles and initiate significant adjustments but observed a lack of such measures.
Reflecting on the tumultuous year of 2020, Agyepong shared his perspective, stating, "2020, which was a tough one, I was expecting the president to take something out of that and make some major changes but he hasn’t done so." This sentiment echoes a desire for proactive responses to challenges and a commitment to adapting strategies for improved governance.
Notably, Agyepong disclosed his public disagreement with the General Secretary over the issue, highlighting the need for change in the government's composition. "It is one area I have disagreed publicly with him with respect because I think change is good sometimes. Even in a football game, you can make changes in your strategy," he remarked. Agyepong emphasized that making adjustments does not necessarily mean dismissing individuals but rather reshaping strategies to address evolving circumstances effectively.
A key concern for Agyepong was the extended tenure of ministers within the government. He questioned the wisdom of keeping ministers in the same positions for seven years, stating, "I've followed politics, and I've never seen ministers being kept for that long, so I don’t think I would give the President a plus on that." His viewpoint reflects a belief in the importance of introducing fresh perspectives and expertise to promote dynamic governance.
Contrastingly, Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, a cousin to the President, defended Akufo-Addo's approach, asserting that the President adheres to the American system of governance. In this system, reshuffling of ministers and appointees is infrequent, and changes are made only when deemed necessary after careful consideration of pros and cons. This perspective emphasizes a deliberate and measured approach to governance decisions.
As the debate surrounding the need for changes in the government structure continues, Agyepong's critique underscores a call for adaptability and responsiveness to challenges, while the President's approach, as explained by Otchere Darko, defends a more cautious and selective approach to ministerial reshuffling. The balance between continuity and adaptability remains a central theme in navigating the complexities of governance.
