Kwamena Duncan Challenges Teachers to Disregard Mahama's Allegations Amid WASSCE Results Controversy
In the aftermath of the controversial West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, former Central Regional Minister and New Patriotic Party member, Kwamena Duncan, is urging teachers not to lend an ear to former President John Dramani Mahama's accusations.
Duncan points out that Mahama had referred to all teachers as thieves, a statement that stirred controversy and resentment within the teaching community. The backdrop for these remarks was Mahama's assertion that the improved results were due to a widespread allowance for cheating among students, with some teachers allegedly colluding in these dishonest practices.
In response to Mahama's allegations, Duncan emphasized that during the challenging period of the Covid-19 pandemic, President Nana Akufo-Addo implemented stringent measures to ensure Ghanaian students received a quality education. He criticized Mahama for what he perceived as an attempt to pit Ghanaian parents against Akufo-Addo's government.
Duncan highlighted the former President's denigration of the hard work of both students and teachers, asserting that Mahama went beyond questioning the integrity of the education system to explicitly labeling Ghanaian teachers as 'thieves.' This, according to Duncan, was a serious affront to the professional reputation of teachers who were allegedly accused of conniving with students to cheat.
Speaking on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' Morning show, Duncan expressed concern about the lasting impact of Mahama's derogatory remarks on the teaching profession. He emphasized that the stain left by the former President's comments could persist unless teachers and teacher unions took proactive steps to clear their names and restore the public's trust.
Duncan's advice to teachers comes at a time when the education sector is grappling with the fallout from the WASSCE controversy, highlighting the importance of addressing the reputational damage caused by such accusations. As the discourse surrounding educational integrity continues, Duncan's call for teachers to rise above the allegations and focus on their commitment to quality education underscores the need for unity and resilience within the teaching community.
