“I look for [the opponent’s] point of weakness, and I try to put [skilled] players in those positions.” – Pep Guardiola

Understanding the importance of half-spaces, Guardiola adjusts his system accordingly, which allows his most talented and creative players to operate there. Players between the lines, called "interiores", dominate Positional Play. At Barca, Guardiola relied on Messi, Xavi and Iniesta to play in half-spaces. At Bayern, wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben were often playing there, while at City, he relied/relies on David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden to command the half-spaces.

Here's why Guardiola places such importance on these areas:

1. HIGHLY TECHNICAL PLAYERS: The half-spaces provide a unique opportunity for highly technical and intelligent players to exploit gaps in the opposition's defense. Players like Messi, Iniesta, De Bruyne, and David Silva thrive in these areas because they have the ability to receive the ball under pressure, turn, and then either find a teammate with a pass or take on defenders.

2. DRAWING DEFENDERS OUT: By having creative players operate in the half-spaces, opposition defenders are forced into a dilemma. They either step out to confront the player, leaving spaces behind them, or they stay compact, allowing the creative player to turn and face the goal. Either scenario can be advantageous for the attacking team.

3. BETTER PASSING ANGLES: When players operate in half-spaces, they often find themselves with a wider range of passing options. They can pass vertically, laterally, or diagonally, and it also allows for easier combinations with teammates. A player in a half-space can link up with full-backs, wingers, central midfielders, and strikers, providing fluidity to the attack.

4. VERSATILITY IN ATTACK: The inclusion of wingers like Ribery and Robben in half-spaces also meant that they could cut inside on their stronger foot, becoming dual threats – they could either shoot or pass.

5. DEFENSIVE TRANSITIONS: Operating in the half-spaces also allows for a balanced defensive shape when the ball is lost. Since players aren't too wide, they can quickly press or drop back into a compact shape.

In Guardiola's teams, you'd often observe this: the full-backs might move into central positions to create overloads, wingers might move into half-spaces, and central midfielders might drift wide. This fluidity and positional rotation make his teams extremely hard to predict and defend against.

The emphasis on half-spaces is just one component of Guardiola's intricate tactical system, but it's a crucial one that underscores his broader philosophy about dominating space and controlling games.
