Okada Riders Association of Ghana, is preparing to submit a petition to the Ministry of Transport on Monday, 5 February 2024, seeking a reconsideration of the newly introduced emissions levy.
The leadership of the Okada Riders Association in the country is preparing to present a formal request to the Ministry of Transport on Monday, February 5, 2024, urging a reassessment of the recently implemented emissions levy. Commencing on February 1, 2023, the Emissions Levy Act (Act 1112) mandates a levy on the Carbon Dioxide equivalent emissions produced by internal combustion engine vehicles.
According to the Act, motorcycles and tricycles are obligated to pay an annual levy of GH?75, while motor vehicles, buses, and coaches with engine capacities up to 3000 cubic centimeters must contribute GH?150 per annum. Larger vehicles, including those with engine capacities surpassing 3000 cubic centimeters, cargo trucks, and articulated trucks, are subjected to an annual levy of GH?300.
Expressing apprehension regarding to what they perceive as an exorbitant levy, the Secretary of the Okada Riders Association, Mr. Majid Amidu, conveyed their intent to formally approach the government with a petition to reassess the implemented levy. He emphasized the economic hardships faced by riders, asserting that the newly imposed levies only compound their financial challenges as riders.
Amidu voiced his discontent, stating, "It is too much. People are suffering. You did not give us jobs, you did not do anything for us and yet you want us to pay GH?75. We will hold another meeting and compose a petition to the government and the entire nation, conveying that enough is enough."
Furthermore, he issued a warning of potential protests if the government remains unyielding on the levy issue. Mr. Amidu Majid confirmed that the petition would be finalized by Monday, 5 February 2024, and promptly will be submitted to the Minister of Transport.?
