Edem Agbana criticizes the emissions levy, labeling it “senseless”.

The Parliamentary Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Ketu North Constituency, Eric Edem Agbana, has strongly criticized the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112), denouncing it as devoid of sense. Agbana contended that this tax policy goes against the fundamental tenets of taxation and should not garner support from the Ghanaian public. He asserted that the Akufo-Addo government lacks effective measures to tackle the current economic challenges in the country.

During a media interview on February 2, Mr. Agbana reassured Ghanaians that if John Mahama secures victory in the December polls, he would annul the Emissions Levy Act. He emphasized the NDC's opposition to what he perceives as illogical taxes, promising to shield Ghanaians from enduring such taxation burdens.

In his critique, Agbana questioned the purpose of the levy imposed by the Akufo-Addo government, questioning whether it aims to address carbon emissions in the environment. He argued that the government's approach to this levy reflects a lack of understanding in solving the economic challenges confronting the nation, deeming it senseless. He confidently stated that, if Mahama is elected in 2024, the levy will be abolished.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has also responded to the implementation of the Emissions Levy Act by suggesting a potential increase in fares. Despite the earlier suspension of a proposed 20% fare hike in January due to the Transport Ministry's intervention, the government has now implemented the emissions levy tax to mitigate carbon emissions from vehicles.

Expressing discontent with the levy tax implementation, GPRTU intends to transfer the levy cost to passengers. The union engaged in discussions with the Transport Ministry and Finance Minister to address the issue, even though the tax was ultimately implemented. Abass Imoro, spokesperson for GPRTU, highlighted the government's decision to enforce the emissions levy tax, compounding the challenges faced by the union.

The Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112), became effective on Thursday, February 1, 2024. According to the government, the implementation aims to combat greenhouse gas emissions, encourage eco-friendly technology and green energy, and enhance environmental management while controlling air and water pollution.
