President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, revoked the appointment of 24 MCE/DCEs and reappointed newly nominees to replace them.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has terminated the appointments of twenty-four district chief executives, according to a letter dated Friday, February 2, 2024. The communication, citing Article 243 (3) (b) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20 (3) (b) of the Local Government Act, 2016, (Act 936), announced the revocation without specifying reasons for the dismissals.

In a subsequent letter dated Saturday, February 3, 2024, President Akufo-Addo disclosed new nominees to fill the resulting vacancies. While the dismissal letter did not elucidate the motives behind the removals, speculation in political circles hints at the involvement of some district chief executives in the recently concluded parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The list below also shows the new nominees to fill the created vacancies:

It is suggested that certain dismissed DCEs either contested or supported candidates in the NPP's parliamentary primaries, a move perceived as contravening the party's directive. The NPP had issued a pre-contest directive instructing metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives not to challenge incumbent Members of Parliament and to refrain from openly endorsing candidates.

Notably, some of the ousted DCEs served in constituencies where the NPP lacks sitting MPs, introducing additional dimensions to the unfolding scenario. The President's actions signal a response to perceived breaches of party directives, aligning with the NPP's pre-primary stance. As the newly appointed nominees are introduced, the political landscape awaits further developments in these district leadership changes.
