As president, I will do away with e-levy, says Bawumia.

Says Bawumia, "I will eliminate e-levy as president."

If Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is elected President of Ghana, he has declared his intention to do away with the e-levy, a tax on electronic financial transactions.

Dr. Bawumia made a clear statement opposing taxes on electronic financial transactions in his first major speech to the public after being elected as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He also reaffirmed his commitment to eliminating e-levy in his capacity as president.

Dr. Bawumia stressed that the elimination of the e-levy will greatly advance his goal of creating a digital and cashless Ghana.

"We must promote the usage of electronic payment channels to make the shift to a cashless economy. Under my administration, there won't be any taxes on digital payments to make this easier. Thus, the e-levy will be eliminated," he said.

Dr. Bawumia also disclosed plans for a new tax system under his administration, which, if put into effect by January 2025, would eliminate the pollution tax, the betting tax, and the projected 15% value-added tax on power rates.

In addition, he declared that Ghana will implement a flat tax structure that is more business- and citizen-friendly and will help both small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) and individuals.

"Uncomplicated flat taxation that is advantageous to businesses and citizens alike will be enacted by my government. According to Dr. Bawumia, this will entail a flat tax percentage of income for individuals and SMEs, which account for 98% of all enterprises in Ghana, together with suitable exemption ceilings to protect the underprivileged.
