Economist Dr. Adu Owusu Sarkodie has expressed contentment and support for the address delivered by the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Sarkodie stated that he slept well after listening to Bawumia and emphasized that Bawumia shouldn't be held accountable for every issue. Endorsing Bawumia’s digitization initiatives as the way forward, Dr. Owusu Sarkodie noted that the ideas presented were not new to them, as they had extensively discussed various tax-related matters.
During his address titled ‘Bawumia Speaks,’ the Vice President made several promises, including the removal of certain tax policies such as the controversial E-Levy, the Emission Tax, and the 15% VAT on electricity. While Bawumia has received praise for these commitments, there are skeptics who question why he is proposing to remove these taxes when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo implemented them.
As an economist, Dr. Sarkodie believes Dr. Bawumia is prepared to address tax regimes to prevent adverse effects on the economy. He described the Vice President's decision to abolish the E-Levy and other taxes should he be elected President as a divine blessing, applauding Bawumia’s vision for a modern system.
Dr. Sarkodie reiterated that the tax regime reforms proposed by Bawumia will be beneficial for economic recovery. Critics have raised questions about the practicality of the proposed tax reforms, particularly in light of the current administration's implementation of these taxes. However, Dr. Sarkodie remains optimistic, seeing the potential for positive economic impact.
Dr. Adu Owusu Sarkodie’s support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's tax reform proposals reflects the differing viewpoints on the potential impact of these changes. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the debate surrounding these tax policies and their potential implications for the economy is expected to persist.
