Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, has unveiled the government's initiative to provide more than 1.4 million tablets to students enrolled in senior high schools as part of the free SHS policy. The minister emphasized that this endeavor aims to enhance the quality of teaching and learning within public senior high schools nationwide.
Addressing attendees at the speech and prize-giving event held at Wesley Girls’ Senior High School, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum revealed that the distribution of the tablets is slated to take place within the coming two months. This strategic move underscores the government's commitment to modernizing educational infrastructure and equipping students with the necessary tools to succeed academically.
“I am happy to tell you that within the next two months, every single
student in this school will have a tablet computer. We are building a
learning management system, so all teachers are going to be trained, and
you will do your homework and class activities online.
“So, if you have support, it should be getting more smart boards so that
it will be a 360-degree smart, technology-driven environment.”
On the back of that, many stake holders have raised serious concerns pertaining to the maintenance of the digital devices going to be distributed. Some have pointed out to the observation of theft cases that may happen and who would be held accountable.
Others too have cited the fact that schools do not have adequate infrastructure to facilitate the learning process. The deplorable state of schools especially in the rural communities is of great concern. While others may not even have sufficient electricity to facilitate the use of such gadgets, some schools in fact do not receive enough resources from the government to augment the meals of the students.
