As the Ghanaian Parliament resumes its sessions from Tuesday, February 20, to February 23, four Ministers of State are set to engage in question-and-answer sessions, responding to a total of 37 queries. The distinguished ministers scheduled to appear before Parliament include the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame; Minister of Education, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum; Minister of Energy, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, and Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah.
The week's parliamentary activities come after Members of Parliament (MPs) participated in an orientation workshop in Ho, the Volta regional capital, focusing on the new Standing Orders. The MPs, divided into two batches, delved into key Orders during the initial phase, with the second batch poised to undergo a similar exercise at the Rock City Hotel.
Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, is anticipated to address seven crucial questions, including an inquiry by MP Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu on measures to criminalize the behavior of doctors who decline treatment and issuance of medical forms to patients with valid NHIS cards, potentially subjecting them to prosecution.
The other three ministers—Education Minister Dr Adutwum, Energy Minister Dr Prempeh, and Roads and Highways Minister Mr Amoako-Attah—are each slated to tackle 10 questions pertaining to their respective portfolios.
In addition to the Q&A sessions, Parliament's agenda for the week includes the admission of statements and motions. Of particular note are the forthcoming report from the Committee on Gender and Children on the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Bill, 2023, and a motion to adopt the Committee on Defence and Interior's report on the Military Operation at Ashiaman.
Several bills are also expected to undergo the second reading, covering topics such as the Chartered Institute of Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners, Ghana Bill, 2023; Budget Bill, 2023; Grains Development Authority Bill, 2022; Ghana Boundary Commission Bill, 2023; and Environmental Protection Bill, 2023.
