The Bono East Regional Office of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) on Wednesday, 21st February, 2024, celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Agency.
The celebration marked 25 years of ensuring the availability of sustainable water and sanitation services in rural and small towns in Ghana.
The Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) which has over the span of 25 years contributed to Ghana's development, was established by an act of Parliament, Act 564 (1998). The establishment of the Agency marked a transformative shift, prioritizing water provision, basic sanitation services, hygiene and promotion, as guided by the National Community Water and Sanitation programe being instrumental in guiding infrastructure development in the water and sanitation sector which is fostering considerable progress.
The Anniversary is being observed across the country on Regional basis.
The Bono East Region held the event at Akuma, in the Nkoranza Municipality in the Bono East Region under the theme, “25 years of sustaining WASH services: transforming rural and small towns water services deliver towards national development.”
In a heartfelt address, the Bono East Regional Director for the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Mrs. Pauline Abrafi Oppong said the establishment of CWSA stands as a pivotal milestone, ushering in a transformative era focused on water provision, basic sanitation services, and hygiene promotion and playing a crucial role in advancing infrastructure developments in the community water and sanitation system.
“Within the 25 years of CWSA existence, significant achievements have been made as at the of 2023 CWSA has employed 1418 staffs to manage 190 water systems in 169 districts in the 16 regions indicates giant steps of improvement", the director recounted to Febea FM's Apiah-Kubi in a closed interview.
According to the Regional Director, despite the efforts, challenges persist as sanitation coverage remains stagnant, continuous breakdown of water systems, poor water quality, high non-revenue, technical skills gaps at the community levels, etc continue to fight against the Agency's goal of providing sustainable water and sanitation services.
She stated that the CWSA acknowledges on bringing all hands on deck to sustain water coverage, therefore calls on the government and stakeholders to ensure the betterment of water system in the various communities for the full benefit of the Water Systems for the people.
She reiterated that CWSA recognize the need for policy transformation to sustain efficiency and accessibility to water and sanitation services for rural communities and small towns, saying, smart metering, technology, innovations, hybrid pumps, automations including solar energy to ensure proper usage of water systems.
The event was graced by the chiefs and the people of Akuma and Brahoho in the Bono East Region.
At the end of the event, 8 Veronica buckets, 10 gallons of liquid soap and disposable towels were donated to the schools in Akuma and Brahoho.
