Chief Financial Officer at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has provided reassurance that the overdue bonuses owed to the Black Queens will be paid.
Eric Mensah Bonsu, the Chief Financial Officer at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has provided reassurance that the overdue bonuses owed to the Black Queens will be addressed today, February 22, 2024. This commitment follows a situation where the Black Queens had threatened to boycott their forthcoming qualification match against Zambia due to the unpaid bonuses owed by the sports ministry.
The team is collectively owed around $180,000 in bonuses for their involvement in six matches which they performed well to meet their winning bonuses. During a visit to the team’s camp on February 21st, Mr. Mensah Bonsu personally assured the players that the outstanding payments would be processed and distributed by 13:00 GMT on Thursday, February 22, 2024.
The prompt settlement of these bonuses is expected to uplift the morale of the team as they prepare for their first-leg match against Zambia’s Coppe Queens in the qualifiers for the 2024 women Olympic Games. The scheduled game between Ghana and Zambia will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, February 23, 2024, with a kick-off time set for 16:00 GMT.
Under the leadership of head coach, Nora Hauptle, the team has showcased remarkable performance, achieving victories in 10 out of 11 matches and scoring a total of 34 goals. Also, they have successfully secured qualification for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Despite their notable accomplishments, the Black Queens are still awaiting payment of outstanding bonuses amounting to $7,500 per player, which pertain to qualification matches played in the previous year. And as reassured by the chief financial officer of the sports ministry, the players and their supporters once again await the fulfillment the unpaid bonuses until they carry out their intended boycott.
