In a press release dated February 24, 2024, Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame clarified his stance on his purported involvement in Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia's Manifesto Committee. Despite being named as a member of the committee for tourism, arts, and culture within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Okyeame Kwame emphasized that he had not officially been appointed and had not received any payment for this task. He asserted his non-partisan and apolitical stance, affirming that he remains open to contributing his expertise to any political party seeking to advance the arts and culture sector in Ghana.
Acknowledging his 26 years of professional experience, Okyeame Kwame reiterated his commitment to serving Ghana wholeheartedly and welcomed opportunities to collaborate across political ideologies. While expressing gratitude for being considered for the committee, he emphasized his independence and dedication to the country's development.
Okyeame Kwame stated, “I wish to reassure my respected following and reiterate that I remain non-partisan and apolitical, as I have been throughout my entire career. I have not been paid by H.E. The Vice President's campaign team to be a member of the committee for the arts and tourism manifesto nor have I officially been invited on my terms as non-partisan participant.”
Okyeame Kwame's statement comes amidst his inclusion in the NPP's Manifesto Committee alongside prominent figures such as former Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Catherine Abelema Afeku, Dr. Ama Boafo-Arthur, Prof. Issahatu Adam, Claudia Lumor, and actor Prince David Osei, among others. The committee, chaired by Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante and Akwasi Agyemang, comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds with expertise in tourism, arts, and culture, demonstrating the party's commitment to these sectors' development.
In light of Okyeame Kwame's clarification, it is evident that his inclusion in the committee does not signify political affiliation but rather recognition of his experience and intellect in the creative industry. As Ghana prepares for political transitions, the involvement of individuals like Okyeame Kwame underscores the importance of fostering collaboration and leveraging expertise across various sectors for national development.
