The Ga-Dangme Youth, a vocal advocacy group championing the interests of the Ga-Dangme people, has issued a strong plea for Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the 2024 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to choose a Ga-Dangme native as his running mate for the impending elections.
During a press briefing held in Accra, the group emphasized the historical neglect suffered by the Greater Accra Region concerning executive leadership roles, particularly within the NPP. They pointed out the glaring absence of any indigenous representative from the region as a running mate for the party, despite its significant status as the administrative and commercial hub of Ghana.
Representing the Ga-Dangme Youth, Nii Ayi Okropong, Chairman of the Blema Kusum Gboo Council, underscored the imperative of equitable representation and inclusivity in political decision-making processes. He decried the sidelining of Ga-Dangme individuals in pivotal leadership positions and urged the NPP to rectify this long-standing disparity by considering a Ga-Dangme candidate as Bawumia’s running mate.
Okropong accentuated the competence and qualifications inherent in Ga-Dangme individuals, citing illustrious personalities such as former Speakers of Parliament and former Chief Justices who hail from the community. He contended that the Ga-Dangme populace has made substantial contributions to Ghana’s development and possesses the necessary expertise and leadership acumen to serve in high-ranking capacities.
The clamor for a Ga-Dangme running mate mirrors a broader thrust for diversity and representation within Ghanaian politics, as marginalized factions strive for increased inclusivity in decision-making spheres. The Ga-Dangme Youth’s advocacy underscores the significance of ensuring adequate representation for all regions and ethnic groups in the country’s leadership frameworks.
As Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia gears up to unveil his running mate for the 2024 elections, attention is firmly fixed on the NPP to observe whether they heed the entreaties of the Ga-Dangme Youth and prioritize inclusivity and diversity in their selection process. The ramifications of this decision will not only influence the dynamics of the imminent elections but also signify the party’s commitment to fostering unity and parity within Ghana’s political panorama.
