In preparation for the 2024 Presidential election, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, has retained Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang previously served as the Education Minister and partnered with Mahama in the 2020 election. Her name emerged as a front-runner for the running mate position amidst rumors suggesting other potential candidates, including former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, economist Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, Member of Parliament Eric Opoku, and retired Police Commissioner Nathan Kofi Boakye.

John Dramani Mahama officially submitted his nomination for running mate to the NDC's Council of Elders on February 27, 2024. According to a statement issued by Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party's General Secretary, the nomination process was carried out in accordance with Article 45 of the NDC Constitution. A meeting with the party’s Council of Elders is scheduled for Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 11 am to deliberate on the nomination.

Additionally, the National Executive Committee will convene at 3 pm on the same day to further discuss the nomination, with Mr. Kwetey assuring that additional meeting details would be promptly communicated to concerned parties.
Expressing confidence in the chosen running mate, Mr. Kwetey stated, “The NDC is confident that the Running Mate will bring a wealth of experience, expertise, and dedication to our campaign.” He emphasized that the selection aligns with John Mahama’s vision as they collectively aim to "Build the Ghana We Want together."

Mr. Kwetey reiterated the party’s commitment to working tirelessly for positive transformation and progress in the country, extending gratitude to supporters for their steadfast loyalty and unwavering commitment. He called for collective effort in embarking on a journey towards a brighter future for Ghana. A statement, issued and endorsed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, clarified that the nomination process adhered strictly to the provisions outlined in Article 45 of the NDC Constitution.
