In a fervent plea to the Ghanaian electorate, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has positioned himself as the preferred choice over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging citizens to elect him for the presidency in the upcoming elections.
Leveraging his extensive experience as a former President of Ghana, Mahama asserted his superiority in governance compared to Dr. Bawumia, whom he criticized for likening his role to that of a mere "driver's mate," thus casting doubt on his ability to effectively lead the nation.
Addressing the nation in a national speech delivered on February 7 at the UPSA Auditorium, Dr. Bawumia distanced himself from the country's economic challenges, downplaying his role as merely an associate to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
However, Mahama, in a public address in the Upper West region on Friday, seized the opportunity to underscore the imperative for Ghanaians to elect him over Dr. Bawumia. He expressed unwavering confidence in himself and his running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, affirming their readiness to lead the country towards economic recovery come December 7, 2024.
"The time has come for us to rescue our nation from the incompetence and ineptitude of the current administration led by Nana Akufo-Addo and his 'driver's mate.' On December 7th, the driver is going, and if the driver hasn't been able to drive properly all these seven years, we are not going to hand over the car of Ghana to the driver's mate," declared Mahama.
Drawing an analogy between the governance of the country and the operation of a vehicle, Mahama emphasized the importance of entrusting leadership to individuals with proven experience and competence. He argued that if the incumbent driver (referring to President Akufo-Addo) failed to steer the nation effectively, it would be unwise to pass the reins to his purportedly inexperienced "driver's mate" (referring to Dr. Bawumia).
"If even the driver could not drive well, how much less the driver's mate? If you have a car and the driver didn't drive well, and so you are taking your car back, will you give it to your former experienced driver, or will you give it to the careless driver's mate? I will give it to the former experienced driver. I won't give it to the driver's mate," asserted Mahama, underscoring the need for competent and seasoned leadership to navigate the complex challenges facing the nation.
In his impassioned appeal to voters, Mahama sought to highlight his track record and leadership credentials, positioning himself as the candidate best suited to lead Ghana into a brighter and more prosperous future.
