The recent passing of the Member of Parliament for Ejisu, John Ampontuah Kumah, has been shrouded in speculation and controversy, with initial reports suggesting poisoning as the cause of his demise. However, a recent alleged autopsy, detailed in a GhanaWeb report, has debunked these claims, attributing Kumah's death to multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer.

Conducted on Friday, March 8, 2024, by a certified pathologist, the autopsy concluded that Kumah succumbed to multiple myeloma, a condition he had been battling since early 2023. Contrary to earlier assumptions, Kumah's family revealed that he had been undergoing treatment for the illness, which had led to his recent return from Germany, where he was receiving medical care.

Multiple myeloma is a malignancy affecting plasma cells, vital components of the immune system responsible for producing antibodies to combat infections. In this condition, abnormal plasma cells proliferate uncontrollably within the bone marrow, displacing healthy blood cells and resulting in various complications such as weakened bones, anaemia, kidney damage, and compromised immune function.

Medical records from the German Hospital, as reported by GhanaWeb, outlined Kumah's diagnosis, which included multiple myeloma along with other medical issues such as a dislocated humerus shaft and a lateral clavicle fracture. Despite undergoing chemotherapy sessions, including one at the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre in Accra, Kumah's health continued to deteriorate.

According to GhanaWeb's report, Kumah was scheduled to resume active treatment in Germany on March 12, 2024. However, against medical advice, he was discharged to participate in the Independence Day celebrations on March 6, 2024, before intending to return for further treatment. Tragically, during transit from Kumasi to Accra, his condition worsened, ultimately leading to his untimely death. Plans were in motion to airlift him back to Germany for medical attention.

Meanwhile, amidst the unfolding events surrounding Kumah's death, his widow, Apostle Lilian Kumah, has taken legal action against Captain Smart, the host of Onua FM's morning show. Alleging that Captain Smart made unsubstantiated claims regarding poisoning targeting Kumah and other NPP figures, Apostle Lilian Kumah has demanded evidence to support these assertions.

While these developments continue to unfold, The Independent Ghana has not independently verified this information but recognizes the importance of providing comprehensive updates regarding Kumah's passing. As the story evolves, further details will be provided.

Multiple myeloma remains a complex and challenging disease, characterized by its impact on plasma cells and its debilitating effects on various bodily systems. Symptoms range from bone pain and weakness to anaemia, kidney damage, and immune suppression. Treatment typically involves a combination of chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and supportive care, underscoring the importance of early diagnosis and comprehensive management strategies.
