Mrs. Lilian Kumah, the widow of the late Deputy Minister of Finance Dr. John Kumah, has revealed that her husband had been battling a severe, previously undiagnosed illness for more than a year.
According to her, the exact illness was confirmed during a medical visit to Germany in August 2023, but she could not reveal the particular illness as a sign of respect for her husband’s memory and confidentiality.
Apostle Lilian is convinced that it was the prolonged struggle that led to Dr. Kumah’s passing and not food poisoning as some had alleged.
In a dignified and sorrowful tone, Apostle Lilian, who is also the General Overseer of Disciples of Christ Ministries, cast doubts on claims that he was poisoned in Tamale in October 2023.
Speaking to Asaase Radio at her matrimonial home in Chantan, a suburb in Accra, Apostle Lilian also expressed deep concern about the food poisoning claims.
Allegations of poisoning have circulated, with radio presenter Captain Smart having made such claims before the death of the lawmaker.
In weeks-old audio and video clips, Captain Smart suggested a sinister plot to poison Dr. Kumah and other political figures, including Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and Chairman Wontumi.
Another radio presenter, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, also alleged that the late Deputy Finance Minister John Kumah was poisoned through guinea fowl meat in Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region.
He claimed that the main target of the alleged poisoning was Chairman Wontumi.
These accusations have resurfaced following Dr. Kumah’s demise, casting a shadow over his legacy and family.
Reacting to these claims, she asked, “Why is it that someone has been this bold to claim that he knows for a fact that a person like Dr. Kumah who has served his country virtually all his life was poisoned, while he was working for his country and party?
“Why should we sit down and not bring that person to book?”
“If it is true that a person who is not dead but alive claims that he knows how my husband died and that he was poisoned, and that person is still moving around for the past three weeks, it hurts me.
“It saddens me, and I do not know how best to express my frustrations about these false claims by such persons,” she added.
Apostle Lilian had taken decisive action by filing a case with the Accra Central Police Headquarters, urging an investigation into allegations surrounding her husband’s death from suspected food poisoning.
Apostle Lilian Kumah implored the Ghana Police Service to conduct a thorough investigation into the claims.
She seeks to bring justice to her husband’s memory.
Enduring courage
Dr. Kumah was in Ejisu in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, March 6, to mark Independence Day celebrations with his constituents.
However, he fell ill the following day Thursday, March 7, prompting his transfer to Accra for medical attention.
Dr. Kumah’s final moments were marked by a courageous fight for life.
While en route from Ejisu to Accra hoping to travel to Germany for further medical treatment, his health deteriorated rapidly.
The Ambulance, therefore, rerouted to Suhum Government Hospital hoping that the medical team there can help stabilize his condition.
Despite the best efforts of the medical team at Suhum Government Hospital, he succumbed to his illness on March 7, 2024.
Dr. Kumah’s passing signifies a significant loss for Ghana.
