In a thrilling showcase of academic prowess and competitive spirit, the Tarkwa Goldfields School Complex has emerged victorious in the annual ninth edition of the Western Region Independence Day Inter-District JHS Quiz Competition. The event, held in Tarkwa to commemorate the region’s 66th Independence Day Celebration, was championed by the region’s traditional leadership.
Fourteen basic schools, representing their respective Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, participated in the fiercely contested competition. Tarkwa Nsuaem emerged as the 2024 champions with 42 points, dethroning the defending champions, St Anthony of Padua Catholic Basic School from Effia Kwesimintsim, who placed third with 38 points. Peace International School from Jomoro Municipal secured the first runner-up position with 39 points.
The victors, Goldfields School Complex, received a bounty of prizes including two brand new Lenovo laptops, a trophy, tablets for the contestants, textbooks, plaques, gold medals, and certificates. The first runner-up, Peace International School, was awarded similar prizes, while the second runner-up, St Anthony of Padua Catholic School, received commendations along with their rewards.
The Acting Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Stephen Kwaku Owusu, lauded the initiative, emphasizing the importance of healthy competition among students at an inter-district level. He endorsed the quiz initiative, which has been successfully organized for the past nine years, and called for measures to sustain and promote it.
The Chairman for the occasion, His Royal Majesty Awulae Angama-Tuajan II, Paramount Chief of Gwira Traditional Area, commended the organizing committee and urged corporate agencies to continue supporting the event. He specifically thanked Goldfields Ghana Ltd for their steadfast sponsorship over the years.
HRM Obrempong Hima Dekyi IXV, the Executive Chairman of the Organizing and Planning Committee, expressed gratitude to various sponsors and supporters, acknowledging their crucial role in the success of the event. Paramount Queen mother of Wassa Fiase Traditional Council, Nana Abena Kumadjoa II, praised the students for their courage and excellence in exchanging ideas throughout the contest.
Hon Benjamin Kessie, MCE for Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing quality education for all. The Western Regional House of Chiefs Registrar, Mr. Theophilus Ollennu Chuasum, commended the students and assured of the House of Chiefs' continuous partnership to promote quality educational initiatives.
The event not only showcased academic excellence but also fostered camaraderie and a sense of achievement among participating schools, highlighting the importance of educational initiatives in nurturing future leaders and contributors to Ghana’s development.
