A pathologist has determined that the death of John Ampontuah Kumah, the late Ejisu lawmaker, was due to natural causes. The postmortem report of the late Deputy Minister for Finance, which was conducted at the Accra Police Hospital, also ruled out the presence of any poison or other harmful substances in his body. The toxicology section of the report, which GhanaWeb managed to procure, read, "Toxicology results for alcohol, common drugs, and poisons were negative."
According to an earlier GhanaWeb report, the lawmaker was undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, just before he passed away. His death was caused by "underlying multiple myeloma," "severe anemia," and "congestive heart failure," according to the autopsy report that was sent to the coroner at the Kaneshie District Magistrate Court on Monday, March 11, 2024. A member of the family has confirmed that the report was officially presented to them on March 12, 2024 and that they are now going over it to figure out how to get the death certificate. The deputy minister of finance allegedly died on Thursday, March 7, 2024, from poisoning, according to many reports.
However, according to GhanaWeb's source close to the lawmaker, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in early 2023 and is currently undergoing treatment. Members of the MP's family revealed after his death that he had come back from Germany when his health started to deteriorate. Multiple myeloma is a malignancy that develops in the white blood cells called plasma cells. These cells help make antibodies that fight against infections. As a result of multiple myeloma, healthy blood cells are expelled from the bone marrow by abnormal plasma cells that are growing uncontrollably. This could lead to weakened bones, anemia, renal illness, and a lowered immune system.
As per GhanaWeb's source, the lawmaker was undergoing treatment at Germany's University Hospital of Erlangen for his illness, which allegedly led to a left arm fracture at one point. The MP was supposed to start active treatment in Germany on March 12, 2024, but according to the source, he was discharged from the hospital on March 6, 2024, to participate in the Independence Day festivities before returning for the treatment, against the doctor's orders. A worsening in the lawmaker's health led to his passing halfway through his trip from Kumasi to Accra. Returning to Germany for medical treatment was the expected course of action.
