The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria has taken legal actions against cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, facing multiple charges related to tampering with the Naira on various occasions in 2023.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria has initiated legal proceedings against Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, for alleged naira mutilation and money laundering charges. Bobrisky's arrest followed a video showing him spraying cash at the premiere of Eniola Ajao’s ‘Beasts of Two Worlds’ movie on March 24, 2024. Under Nigerian law, tampering with the Naira is a punishable offense.
According to the EFCC, Bobrisky faces multiple charges related to tampering with the Naira on various occasions in 2023. These incidents include spraying cash at social events in Lagos, Ikorodu, and Ikeja, among others. Additionally, Bobrisky is accused of money laundering through his company, Bob Express, for allegedly failing to report millions of Naira deposited into its accounts over several years.
Dele Oyewale, EFCC's spokesperson, confirmed Bobrisky's arrest, stating that it was due to alleged abuse of Naira notes and currency mutilation. Oyewale emphasized the EFCC's commitment to upholding the dignity of the Naira and assured that Bobrisky would face court charges soon.
This development comes shortly after actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin's conviction for a similar offense. Omoseyin was arrested on February 1, 2024, after a video surfaced of her spraying and stepping on new Naira notes at an event. She was sentenced to six months in prison or a fine of N300,000.
These cases underscore the seriousness with which Nigerian authorities are tackling offenses related to the Naira, emphasizing the importance of upholding the integrity of the country's currency. The EFCC's actions demonstrate their dedication to enforcing financial regulations and prosecuting individuals who violate them, regardless of their public profile.
