The Accra High Court handed down a verdict hence, sentencing Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, a former head of MASLOC, and Daniel Axim, a former Operations Manager, to prison terms of 10 years and five years respectively. They were found guilty on 78 counts including causing financial loss to the state, stealing, conspiracy, money laundering, and violating public procurement laws.
Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe emphasized the importance of civil servants maintaining integrity and urged parents to instill both education and integrity in their children. Attionu, tried in absentia, received a 10-year sentence, while Axim received five years. Additional fines and custodial sentences were imposed for various charges.
The prosecution accused them of embezzling millions from MASLOC and causing substantial financial loss to the state. Investigations revealed misappropriation of funds intended for projects and assistance to disaster victims. Despite Attionu's absence, her statements and defense were considered in the verdict.
Axim defended himself by citing pressure to obey superiors and risking job loss for questioning orders. However, the court held him accountable, noting his high qualifications and role in facilitating fraudulent transactions. Deputy Attorney-General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah assured that Attionu would be brought back to serve her sentence, despite her absence during trial.
The court had previously granted permission for the trial to proceed in Attionu's absence, as she had left for medical treatment in the United States but failed to return. Additionally, former GNPC CEO Alex Mould and actor Gavivina Tamakloe were ordered to pay a bail bond for Attionu's absence, highlighting the seriousness of the case.
