The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LESLEC) has intensified its efforts to combat environmental violations across the city. In a series of recent actions, the agency tackled illegal structures, waste management practices, and street vending.
On Wednesday, LESLEC operatives demolished shops built around Akiogun Road, Oniru, in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area. A video circulating online shows vendors scrambling to save their wares as the demolition commenced. According to a post on the official social media handle of Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, these traders had previously been removed from the location last week, only to return. The post further stated that two individuals were arrested during the latest operation.
Similar action was taken in the Lekki-Ajah area, where LESLEC demolished kiosks obstructing Chevron Drive. Commissioner Wahab emphasized that these vendors had been dislodged earlier and their re-emergence prompted the renewed intervention.
Beyond street vending, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) also took decisive action. They sealed the office building of Carillion Construction at Victoria Island after discovering the company was illegally discharging sewage into the public drainage system using a pumping machine. This blatant disregard for environmental regulations resulted in the immediate closure of the building.
The clampdown extended to illegal structures blocking drainage channels. Acting on a petition from the Omole Phase Two Community Development Association, a joint task force comprising the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, LESLEC, and the Environment and Special Offenses Taskforce removed such structures from the Somide Odujinrin Avenue drainage system.
Commissioner Wahab reiterated the Lagos State Government's commitment to a clean and healthy environment. He emphasized a "zero tolerance" policy for illegally discharging untreated sewage into public drains and water bodies. Residents were urged to comply with environmental regulations and avoid practices that degrade the city.
These recent actions by LESLEC and LSWMO represent a multi-pronged approach to tackling environmental challenges in Lagos. By addressing illegal structures, improper waste disposal, and irresponsible business practices, the agencies aim to create a more sustainable and healthy urban environment for all residents.
