Stevie Wonder, the famous American singer-songwriter, is now officially a citizen of Ghana. He took the Oath of Allegiance and received his Certificate of Citizenship at a ceremony held on Monday, May 13, at the Jubilee House, Ghana's seat of government.
Renowned American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder has fulfilled a long-held dream by officially becoming a citizen of Ghana. The ceremony, held at the Jubilee House, Ghana's seat of government, saw him take the Oath of Allegiance and receive his Certificate of Citizenship.
This significant event marks Stevie Wonder's integration into Ghanaian society, a decision he made three years ago citing political unrest in the US. He expressed his desire to see positive change and stated his intention to move permanently to Ghana.
Stevie Wonder, born Steve Hardaway Morris, was assisted in the citizenship process by Circuit Court judge Kizita Naa Koowaa Quarshie and received his certificate and passport from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The joyous occasion included cutting a cake in the colors of Ghana's flag.
In his remarks, Stevie Wonder thanked President Akufo-Addo for recognizing the importance of unity and expressed his belief in the power of coming together as one global community. He highlighted his long-standing desire to become a Ghanaian citizen, emphasizing the connection between Africa and its diaspora.
By becoming a Ghanaian citizen, Stevie Wonder joins a distinguished list of individuals who have made significant contributions to Ghana, including writers, artists, and activists like Maya Angelou and W.E.B. du Bois.
President Akufo-Addo praised Stevie Wonder's talent and commitment to promoting unity and cultural exchange among people of African descent. He emphasized the importance of celebrating diversity and building a future where creativity thrives.
The ceremony also symbolized the goals of the Year of Return, which aimed to strengthen connections between Africa and its diaspora. Mr. Kow Essuman, legal counsel to President Akufo-Addo, congratulated Stevie Wonder on social media for his new status as a Ghanaian citizen.
