In a bid to address the longstanding issue of owed allowances to nursing trainees across Ghana, Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has announced the disbursement of GH¢177 million. The funds, earmarked for the Ministry of Health, aim to settle arrears owed to nursing trainees nationwide.

The nursing trainee allowance, which had been discontinued, was reinstated by the Akufo-Addo administration. However, delays in payment had left many nursing trainees facing financial uncertainty.

During a meeting with nurses and midwives in Accra, Dr. Bawumia assured that the allocated funds would be transferred to the Ministry of Health imminently. He emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating that the money is expected to be available for disbursement by Thursday.

“This Thursday, the Controller is transferring GH¢177 million to the Ministry of Health to pay the nursing training allowances,” Dr. Bawumia affirmed. He further urged swift action upon receipt of the funds, instructing Dr. Okoe-Boye to ensure prompt disbursement to the accounts of nursing trainees.

The move underscores the government's commitment to supporting healthcare professionals and addressing the challenges faced by trainees in the healthcare sector. By clearing the outstanding allowances, the administration aims to alleviate financial burdens and enhance the well-being of nursing trainees pursuing their education.

The announcement has been met with anticipation and relief among nursing trainees, who have awaited the resolution of this issue for months. With the impending disbursement of funds, trainees can expect to receive their long-awaited allowances, providing much-needed support as they continue their training.

As the government takes proactive steps to prioritize the welfare of healthcare workers, including trainees, the disbursement of GH¢177 million marks a significant milestone in ensuring the stability and sustainability of Ghana's healthcare sector.
