Bukom Banku, the renowned Ghanaian boxing star and musician, revealed a lesser-known chapter of his life. On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, during an interview on the midmorning show Ayekoo Ayekoo on Accra 100.5 FM, Bukom Banku, whose real name is Braimah Isaac Kamoko, disclosed that he was once a habitual thief at the bustling Makola market.

At 43 years old, Banku reflected on his turbulent past with remarkable honesty. Responding to a query from the show’s host, Nana Romeo, about whether he had ever developed a habit of stealing, Banku confessed in Pidgin English, "When we were in Bukom, my friends and I used to go to Makola to steal PK gum, money, and snatch bags. I have to admit that I have done those things before."

The popular boxer explained that his journey of change began in 1995 when he took up boxing. He acknowledged the influence of those who had prayed for him and supported him through his transformation, attributing his decision to abandon his life of crime to their unwavering faith and encouragement.

In his confession, Banku shared vivid anecdotes from his days as a thief, describing how he and his friends, including Seth and Jacob—whom he humorously referred to as "the captain"—managed to evade capture. He claimed that his swift running abilities ensured he was never caught, stating, "As soon as someone shouts 'Thief, thief,' I am already far away."

Banku recounted their tactics, painting a picture of youthful mischief rather than malicious intent. "We would divert people's attention by engaging them in conversation while one of us quickly takes their belongings, or we would feign interest in what they are buying or selling and steal from them," he explained, showcasing his characteristic humor.

He also mentioned that their group included twin brothers who were significant figures in Ghana's petty crime scene, but like him, they had since turned their lives around. Importantly, Banku distinguished their petty theft from the more severe crime of armed robbery, stressing that their actions never involved violence or weapons.

Reflecting on the period from 1992 to 1994, Banku admitted their lack of awareness and knowledge at the time, emphasizing that by 1995, they had all moved beyond their criminal past. His story serves as a powerful testament to personal growth and redemption, demonstrating that even those with a troubled past can change for the better with the right support and determination.
