Andy Appiah-Kubi, a member of parliament for Asante Akim North for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stated that if he had the choice, he would not have selected Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to be Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's running partner. According to reports, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has selected Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the minister of energy, as his chosen running mate for the 2018 general elections. This came during an important meeting in the Jubilee House with President Nana Akufo Addo.

In accordance with the party's constitution, the flagbearer will now offer Dr. Opoku Prempeh's name to the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Should this be approved, the party will proceed to designate Dr. Prempeh as its running mate. Although acknowledging that Matthew Opoku Prempeh possesses the necessary qualities to run for vice president, Andy Appiah-Kubi declared he would not select Matthew Opoku Prempeh to run alongside Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming national elections. In Andy Appiah-Kubi's opinion, NAPO is ineligible to lead the party and the nation in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's absence.

He expressed his deep disappointment that the Majority Caucus was not included in the selection of the party's ideal running partner. "As a caucus, we haven't been approached to express our positions, but if it were up to me to decide, I wouldn't pick Appiah-Kubi. Considering that I don't prefer him... He clarified, "I would like someone who will be approachable to the people on the ground, who can cast votes, who will submit to the presidency, and who will also bring parliament and the executive closer together." The legislator said, "We should find somebody who, if the presidential candidate is not there, will hold the hand of a member of parliament and go and campaign in that member's constituency. He cannot hold my hand, so why should I prefer him?" He asked a question.
