The unexpected burial of the late Nollywood actor John Okafor, also known as Mr. Ibu, in his own sitting room, has sparked strong emotions and caused alarm among many. Mr. Ibu battled poor health for a while before passing away on March 2, 2024. His hometown of Amuri, located in Enugu State's Nkanu West Local Government Area, laid him to rest on Friday, June 28, 2024. Many people had initially assumed that the well-liked actor would be laid to rest in a conventional cemetery, but his family decided to eschew convention and bury him in his living room.

On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Nollywood actors and the Rangers International Football Club held a novelty match in his honor. A candlelight parade the next day drew a sizable audience of Mr. Ibu's family, friends, and coworkers. Those who loved him were able to pay their final respects at this heartfelt farewell gathering.

On Thursday, June 27, his hometown held a wake in his honor. Earlier in the month, the Performers Guild of Nigeria honored Mr. Ibu and two other performers who had passed away, Amaechi Muonagor and Zulu Adigwe, in a candlelight service at Abuja's Unity Fountain. Notable individuals attended this event, including Patience Ozokwor and Angela Okorie, well-known actors, and Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential contender for 2023.
