Andy Appiah-Kubi, the MP for Asante Akim North and a member of the party's National Council, has expressed his displeasure with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's choice for running partner in the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Dr. Bawumia, the party's nominee for governor in the upcoming general elections of 2024, has selected Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running partner. President Nana Akufo-Addo formally received the decision during a meeting at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, June 25.

JoyNews' Elton Brobbey, a Presidential Affairs correspondent, reports that during the meeting, President Akufo-Addo discussed the situation and gave advice before deciding to support Dr. Bawumia's decision. Nonetheless, not everyone in the party has agreed with the choice. Appiah-Kubi openly voiced his displeasure with the pick, contending that Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, is not the ideal candidate to collaborate with Dr. Bawumia. He argued that not all members of the NPP base, especially MPs, would support Napo's candidacy. Appiah-Kubi also expressed doubts about the Energy Minister's capacity to successfully advocate for a range of constituents.

"As a caucus, we haven't received consultation to articulate our stance, so I hesitate to address a majority." You can ask me, Appiah-Kubi, for my opinion on that matter. If I had the choice, I wouldn't choose him. I do not prefer him. Appiah-Kubi emphasized, "Appiah-Kubi is saying that he is not my preference, but that doesn't mean he is not qualified."

This internal discord serves as a reminder of the NPP's continuous struggles and disagreements as they get ready for the next elections. Selecting a running partner is an important decision that can have a big impact on the party's electoral prospects. The NPP's leadership must strive for harmony and consensus as the party negotiates these internal conflicts in order to put up a united front for the voters. The debate over Dr. Opoku Prempeh's selection highlights the intricacies and dynamics of political coalitions as well as the significance of making calculated decisions in the run-up to elections.
