Earlier this week, it was reported that the UK chapter of the New Patriotic Party, in collaboration with the Young Forum (UK), had collected funds to back the presidential campaign of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. Many were taken aback by the enormous amount of money that was raised at the event. In recognition of the Vice President, around £1,200,000 was collected. He plans to use the funds to further his campaign and ensure that the NPP wins the December elections. The elections that take place this year will be among the most significant in the country's history.
In a showdown for control of the Jubilee House, Bawumia and John Mahama will square off. After having his first term cut short by electoral defeats in 2016 and 2020, John Mahama is vying for reelection. Given Ghana's present economic situation, numerous specialists in the field think the NDC has the best chance of winning the elections. Because of this possibility, the NPP has stepped up its campaign and increased its financial investment to win over voters and maintain its grip on power.
An ex-NPP executive claims that the party could never have raised 1.2 million GBP in the UK. He elaborated by saying the party should give the Ghanaians the truth since it deceived them. Kwame Jude, a former chairman of the NPP in the UK, admitted to Afia Pokuaa that the party lied to Ghanaians while speaking with her.
No one would want to back the NPP, he said, after seeing how much fun government officials are having in Ghana. I have previous experience serving as the chairman of a UK chapter of the NPP. Without a shadow of a doubt, they could not have raised $1.2 million in the UK. Our inability to raise that sum persisted even in 2016 when we were firmly opposed. We failed to raise that amount in 2016 while I was a part of the US party executives.
Even when I was named chairman in 2018, we still failed to raise that much. Possibly they went all the way from Ghana to the UK with the money. Do you believe that Ghanaians residing in the UK will contribute given the extravagant lifestyles of our lawmakers? No, we will not be donating to those in Ghana. The amount could be around 1.2 million cedis, not pounds, Kwame Jude clarified.
