Cristiano Ronaldo, 39, has long been celebrated as Portugal's hero, yet the prospect of becoming the antagonist moved him to tears. The football superstar was visibly emotional after his 105th-minute penalty miss during Portugal's Euro 2024 last-16 clash against Slovenia on Monday.

Despite several attempts to breach Slovenia's resilient defense and Jan Oblak saving his penalty, Ronaldo couldn't break the deadlock in a match that remained goalless after 120 minutes, leading to a penalty shootout.

Stepping up first for Portugal in the shootout, Ronaldo redeemed himself by scoring, contributing to his team's 3-0 victory on penalties after Diogo Costa spectacularly saved all three Slovenia attempts.

Now on a quest for redemption, Ronaldo and his team are set to face France next, a rematch of the 2016 final where Portugal secured their first European Championship title in Paris. Reflecting on past challenges, Ronaldo recalled his 2016 Euro final exit due to injury, witnessing Eder's decisive strike against Les Bleus.

"I always give my best for this shirt, regardless of the outcome, and I'll continue to do so," Ronaldo affirmed in an interview with RTP. "I've been doing this for 20 years—missing the penalty today won't change that."

Having made his Euros debut in 2004, Ronaldo has since become a legendary figure in international football, representing clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus before moving to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia. His stellar career includes multiple records and accolades, and he remains determined to leave his mark in what he describes as his final European Championship appearance.

Portugal's coach Roberto Martinez acknowledged Ronaldo's emotional investment in the game, stating, "His tears speak volumes about his passion and commitment to football." Ronaldo's resolve and leadership continue to inspire his teammates, reinforcing high standards and resilience.

Looking ahead, Ronaldo prepares to face France, acknowledging their strength but remaining steadfast in his determination to contribute to Portugal's success in the tournament.
