The New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially introduce Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as "NAPO," as the running mate to their flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 general elections today, Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
The announcement was held at Kumasi Jubilee Park in the Ashanti Region, the stronghold of the party.
The event is anticipated to gather significant figures within the party, including President Akufo-Addo, the Council of Elders, Members of Parliament, and other key members.
It was on July 4, that the NPP's National Council officially endorsed the current Energy Minister as the running mate to Dr. Bawumia.
During his unveiling in Kumasi on Tuesday, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, popularly called NAPO, asserted that no president, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has developed Ghana like President Akufo-Addo has done since 2017.
“Since independence from 1957 till today, we have not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” NAPO said to a cheering gathering.
The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo's impact relative to other Presidents we have had.
I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor.
I note the concerns raised after my statement. I apologize sincerely and regret any discomfort caused.
A religious leader in Techiman in the Bono East Region has expressed his dissatisfaction with Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh's (Napo) comment and urged that counseling be provided to hold people in authority accountable.
The Public Relations Officer for Ambassadors for Christ for Apostles Pentecostal Ministry International (APMI), Apostle John Erezola, states that traditional leaders and stakeholders should not shy away from voicing their displeasure against government actions or inactions when necessary.
According to Apostle John, in an exclusive interview with Apiah-Kubi on Fabea FM's "Me Man Ho Dadwen," it is the responsibility of the religious community, stakeholders, and traditional leaders to provide representation on behalf of the people in the country.
He stated, "our utterances in this country without thinking about its consequences will be a negative impact in the country's destructive".
Apostle John made these comments in response to Napo's comparison of the achievements of the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo during his unveiling as the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In addition to Apostle John's displeasure, he stated that Napo's apology should be rejected, saying the letter of apology lacks credible evidence of regret.
