In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old man named Nana Kofi Amofa, also known as Kofi Yesu, was arrested for trying to sell his young niece in exchange for money. He intended to use the money to secure a Canadian visa. The arrest took place on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, around 10:00 pm at Gomoa Buduburam, a location near Obolo Estate in the Central Region of Ghana.

The Central East Regional Police Intelligence Unit (PID) acted swiftly after receiving information about Amofa's illegal plans. It was reported that Amofa expressed his desire to sell his 6-year-old niece to gather funds for his travel ambitions. The police, acting undercover as potential buyers, arranged to meet him for the transaction. During this meeting, Amofa set the price for the child at GHC150,000.

Upon his arrest, Amofa confessed that the girl, who is his senior brother’s daughter, was the intended victim. His brother, Kwadwo Brako, lives in Nyamebekyere, a small village near Akyem Ayirebi in the Eastern Region. Amofa had lured his niece to stay with him by promising better educational opportunities. However, his real intention was to exploit her for financial gain.

This incident highlights a disturbing case of betrayal and exploitation within a family. The police have taken both Amofa and the young girl into custody, handing them over to the Kasoa Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) for further investigation. This unit specializes in handling cases of domestic violence and child exploitation, ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals.

The community is in shock, as the news of such a heinous act spreads. Many are struggling to comprehend how a family member could attempt to sell a child for personal gain. This case has sparked conversations about child protection and the importance of safeguarding children from abuse and exploitation.

The authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may endanger children. They emphasize the need for communities to work together in protecting the rights and well-being of children, who are among the most vulnerable members of society.

In light of this incident, there are calls for stricter laws and harsher penalties for those involved in child trafficking and exploitation. The government and law enforcement agencies are being encouraged to increase efforts to combat these crimes and ensure justice for victims.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community awareness and the responsibility of each individual to protect children from harm. It is crucial for families to create safe environments where children can grow up without fear of exploitation or abuse.

The arrest of Nana Kofi Amofa is a step toward justice for his young niece and a warning to others who may consider engaging in such criminal activities. The investigation continues, and the authorities are committed to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
