A man in his 30s was found dead early Tuesday morning, July 30, 2024, in Suhyen, New Juaben North Municipality of the Eastern Region. He is believed to have been electrocuted while attempting to steal a transformer belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The grim discovery was made near the ECG transformer, sparking a swift response from local authorities. The Deputy NADMO Director of the New Juaben North Municipal Assembly, Kankam Twumasi Daniel, who is also the Assembly Member for the Gyamfikrom Electoral Area, provided details of the incident.

Daniel explained that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana Police Service were alerted to the situation by a distress call early Tuesday. The call prompted the immediate dispatch of a response team to the scene in Suhyen.

"Upon arrival, we discovered the lifeless body of an unidentified man believed to be in his 30s near the ECG transformer," Daniel said.

Preliminary observations suggest that the man was attempting to steal the transformer when he was electrocuted. This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers associated with tampering with electrical equipment, especially those owned by utility companies like the ECG.

The body of the deceased has been transported to St. Joseph’s Mortuary, where a pathologist will perform an autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death. While the initial evidence points to electrocution due to attempted theft, the autopsy will provide a conclusive report.

The Effiduase Division of the Ghana Police Service has been informed about the incident and has launched an investigation. Authorities hope to uncover more details surrounding the man's identity and the circumstances that led to his tragic death.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in interfering with electrical infrastructure. It also underscores the importance of public awareness regarding the dangers of such actions. The ECG transformer, like many other pieces of electrical equipment, carries high voltage electricity. Unauthorized tampering can result in severe injuries or death.

As the investigation continues, the community of Suhyen is left to grapple with the tragic loss of life and the underlying issues that may have driven the deceased to such a dangerous act. This incident also calls for a broader discussion on the socio-economic factors that contribute to such desperate measures.

The Ghana Police Service and NADMO are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses. In the meantime, the community is encouraged to cooperate with authorities and provide any information that may assist in identifying the deceased and understanding the full context of the incident.

The tragic event in Suhyen is a sobering reminder of the need for heightened vigilance and community cooperation in preventing theft and ensuring public safety around electrical installations.
