A letter which was written by the French Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Jules-Armand Aniambossou, reacting to some questions asked about the alleged performance of Sarkodie at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has surfaced online.
The letter, dated July 19, 2024, responded to a query from Mr. Yahaya Alhassan of the New Ghana Social Justice Forum, who had raised concerns regarding Sarkodie’s scheduled performance because he felt the award-winning musician is “misogynistic,” citing lyrics from the song “Jennifer Lomotey,” where he referenced a folklore about Krobo women and promiscuity.
In the letter addressed to Mr. Yahaya Alhassan, Ambassador Aniambossou clarified that Sarkodie, whose real name is Michael Owusu Addo, will not be performing at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Instead, Sarkodie’s performance was scheduled as part of the Africa Fan Zone—”Station Afrique”—which will take place on August 9, 2024, at Stade Robert César—L’Île-Saint-Denis.
The ambassador highlighted that Station Afrique is an independent cultural event running concurrently with the Olympic Games.
Ambassador Aniambossou also reaffirmed the Embassy of France in Ghana’s commitment, alongside the French National Olympic and Sports Committee, to promoting equal human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment in all their projects and initiatives. He underscored that the embassy does not endorse any form of discrimination or actions that undermine these values.
Earlier this month, rumors about Sarkodie’s potential performance at the Olympic Games gained traction after his personal DJ, DJ Mensah, mentioned in an interview on Asaase Radio that they were billed to perform. This statement sparked a wave of reactions from fans and social justice advocates alike, leading to widespread speculation and concern.
However, DJ Mensah later came out to clarify his remarks, stating that his comments had been misunderstood by many. He issued an apology, emphasizing that there had been no confirmed arrangement for Sarkodie to perform at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
