OLYMPICS 2024: GHANA’S BENJAMIN AZAMETI CAME SECOND IN MEN’S 100m HEAT 1

Benjamin Azameti finished men’s 100m (heat 1) in 10.08 seconds and securing his place in the next round.

The men's 100-meter dash is always one of the marquee events at the Olympics, captivating audiences worldwide. This year's competition kicked off with the preliminary heats on Saturday morning, setting the stage for a thrilling display of speed and athleticism.

The first heat featured Ghana's Benjamin Azamati, who took to the track in lane 6. The race quickly became a spectacle when Jeremiah Azu of Great Britain was disqualified for a false start, a decision that stirred some controversy. Despite Azu's protests and attempts to appeal, the officials stood firm, and he was escorted off the track.

With the tension high, Jamaica's Kishane Thompson, the current world leader with an impressive 9.77 seconds this year, emerged victorious in the heat, clocking a solid 10.00 seconds. Azamati followed closely behind, finishing in 10.08 seconds and securing his place in the next round. Cuba's Reynaldo Espinosa rounded out the top three, also advancing.

The second heat saw Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala take the lead, crossing the finish line in 10.08 seconds. Chituru Ali from Italy claimed second place, while Germany's Joshua Hartmann secured the third spot, all moving forward in the competition.

The third heat provided one of the day's biggest surprises. Louie Hinchliffe, the British champion, put on an outstanding performance, finishing first with a time of 9.98 seconds, just shy of his personal best. He managed to outpace reigning world champion Noah Lyles, who recovered from a shaky start to finish second in 10.04 seconds. Hinchliffe's victory was a statement, as he dominated from the start and maintained his lead, easing up only in the final meters.

In the fifth heat, Ghana's Abdul Rashid Saminu put in a solid performance, finishing third. While he didn't win the heat, his effort was enough to keep him in contention for the next stages of the competition.

These heats set the stage for what promises to be a fierce battle in the men's 100m finals. With standout performances from athletes like Kishane Thompson, Ferdinand Omanyala, and Louie Hinchliffe, the competition is heating up. The tension and drama of the disqualification, combined with impressive runs, have already provided fans with plenty to talk about. As the athletes prepare for the next round, the anticipation only grows for what will undoubtedly be an unforgettable race.
