Aliko Dangote, the renowned Nigerian entrepreneur, has once again ascended to the pinnacle of wealth in Africa, according to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index. With a net worth of $13.7 billion, Dangote has reclaimed the title of Africa's richest individual, surpassing the South African tycoon Johann Rupert and his family, whose net worth stands at $13.3 billion.
Just a short while ago, reports suggested that Rupert had overtaken Dangote, with his fortune reaching $13.6 billion. However, recent updates have corrected the record, placing Dangote back at the top of Africa's wealth rankings. The Bloomberg Billionaire Index lists Rupert as the 155th richest person globally, while Dangote holds the 149th position.
The fluctuations in their respective fortunes have been notable. Dangote's wealth saw a recent increase of $144 million, although his net worth has decreased by $1.38 billion year-to-date. In contrast, Rupert experienced a decrease of $334 million in his last valuation change but has enjoyed a year-to-date increase of $875 million.
Despite the financial ups and downs, Dangote has managed to maintain his wealth amidst a series of challenges. His ambitious project, a newly established oil refinery, has faced numerous hurdles, prompting discussions about transferring control to Nigeria's state-owned energy corporation, NNPC. Furthermore, the Nigerian economy has been grappling with protests and economic difficulties, adding to the complexities faced by Dangote.
The recent shifts in net worth were particularly evident between July 29th and August 2nd. During this period, Dangote's wealth slightly dipped from $13.8 billion to $13.6 billion, while Rupert's increased from $13.4 billion to $13.6 billion. However, the latest valuation has seen Dangote once again edge out Rupert, solidifying his position as Africa's wealthiest person.
Other prominent Africans also feature in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. These include South Africans Nicky Oppenheimer with a net worth of $10.9 billion and Natie Kirsh at $8.74 billion, alongside Egyptians Nassef Sawiris, valued at $8.63 billion, and Naguib Sawiris at $6.94 billion.
